Knowing when to plant grass seed makes the difference between a thick lawn and a patchy one. Seed needs the right soil temperature and moisture to sprout. Plant at the wrong time, and the seedlings struggle or never appear. This guide explains the best seeding windows for each grass type.
First, identify your grass type. The best time depends on it.
If you are unsure, ask a local garden center or your county extension office.
Late summer to early fall is the ideal window. Aim for late August through mid-October in most northern areas. Soil stays warm, so seed sprouts quickly. Meanwhile, the air is cooler, which reduces stress on young grass.
Fall seeding also means fewer weeds. Crabgrass and other summer weeds are dying back by then. Our guide on how to get rid of crabgrass covers that topic in detail.
Spring works as a second choice. Plant as soon as the soil reaches about 50 to 55°F. However, spring seedlings face summer heat and weed pressure, so expect to water more.
Late spring to early summer is best. Wait until the soil reaches at least 65°F. Warm-season grasses sprout slowly in cool soil, and frost can kill them. Therefore, many homeowners seed between May and June.
Remove rocks, weeds and dead grass. Then loosen the top inch or two of soil with a rake. A soil test is also helpful, because it shows what nutrients your lawn lacks.
Use a broadcast or drop spreader for large areas. Follow the rate on the bag. Too much seed causes crowding, while too little leaves gaps.
Rake the seed gently so it touches the soil. Add a thin layer of straw or peat moss to hold moisture. Avoid burying the seed deeply, because it needs light to sprout.
Keep the top inch of soil moist. Water lightly once or twice a day until the seedlings appear. After that, water less often but more deeply. This pattern builds strong roots.
Wait until the new grass reaches about three to four inches. Then mow with a sharp blade and remove no more than one-third of the height.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggests watering in the early morning to reduce waste. See its outdoor water-saving tips for more.
The question of when to plant grass seed has a simple answer. Choose early fall for cool-season grass and late spring for warm-season grass. Prepare the soil, keep the seed moist and be patient. In a few weeks, you will see a greener lawn take shape.
