Home Maintenance Checklist: Seasonal Tasks for Every Homeowner
A simple seasonal home maintenance checklist that helps you prevent costly repairs and protect your home's value all year long.
Knowing how to unclog a drain can save you a plumber’s fee and a lot of frustration. A slow sink or shower usually means hair, grease or soap scum has built up inside the pipe. Most clogs are easy to clear with basic tools. This guide covers six methods, starting with the gentlest.
Watch for these warning signs.
If multiple drains back up together, the problem may sit in the main sewer line. In that case, call a plumber.
Start with the simplest option. Boil a kettle of water, then pour it slowly down the drain in two or three stages. Hot water melts grease and loosens soap buildup. However, do not use boiling water on PVC pipes or a cracked porcelain sink. Use very hot tap water instead.
This classic mix creates a fizzing reaction that breaks up gunk.
A plunger works well on sinks, tubs and toilets. Use a flat-bottom cup plunger for sinks. First, block the overflow opening with a wet cloth. Then fill the basin with enough water to cover the cup. Push down and pull up firmly for about twenty seconds. The pressure often dislodges the clog.
The curved pipe under your sink catches debris. Place a bucket underneath. Next, unscrew the slip nuts by hand or with pliers. Remove the trap, clean out the gunk and rinse it. Then reassemble the pipe and run water to check for leaks.
A drain snake, also called an auger, reaches deep clogs. Feed the cable into the drain and turn the handle. When you feel resistance, keep rotating to hook or break the clog. Then pull the snake out slowly, and flush the pipe with hot water. Hair clogs in showers respond especially well to this tool.
Set the vacuum to liquid mode. Seal the hose tightly around the drain opening. Turn it on, and the suction can pull the blockage free. This method is handy for kitchen sinks and tubs.
Store-bought liquid cleaners promise fast results. Yet they can damage pipes, harm the environment and cause burns. The EPA WaterSense program promotes water-wise habits that protect your plumbing. If you need a chemical product, wear gloves and goggles, and never mix products.
Another common household annoyance is a noisy tank. See our guide on how to fix a running toilet next.
You now know how to unclog a drain using safe, low-cost methods. Begin with hot water, move to baking soda, and then try a plunger or snake. If the clog persists, call a licensed plumber before the problem gets worse.
