How to Winterize Your Home: 12 Steps Before the First Freeze
Learn how to winterize your home with 12 simple steps that protect pipes, cut heating costs and prevent cold-weather damage.
Knowing how to clean a dryer vent can help prevent a house fire. Lint builds up inside the duct every time you dry a load. Over time, that lint blocks airflow and traps heat. The U.S. Fire Administration reports that clothes dryers cause thousands of home fires each year, and most start with lint.
If you notice any of these signs, clean the vent right away.
Clean the vent at least once a year. Clean it more often if you have pets, a large family or a long duct run. Also empty the lint trap after every load.
First, unplug the machine. If it is a gas dryer, also shut off the gas valve. Then pull the dryer away from the wall carefully.
Loosen the clamp that holds the duct to the back of the dryer. Slide the duct off. Check the duct for crushed sections or tears.
Use the vacuum hose to remove lint from the dryer outlet and the duct end. Reach in as far as you safely can.
Attach the brush to the flexible rod. Push it into the duct and rotate it to loosen lint. Add rod sections as needed. Work back and forth until no more lint comes out.
Go outside and remove the vent cover. Run the brush toward the house, and pull out all lint. Clear the flap so it opens and closes freely.
Remove the lint screen and vacuum the slot. Wash the screen with warm, soapy water if it feels waxy from dryer sheets.
Reattach the duct with foil tape and a clamp. Push the dryer back gently without crushing the duct. Plug it in, then run a short cycle and check that air flows strongly from the outside vent.
Use rigid or semi-rigid metal ducts. Avoid white vinyl or plastic foil ducts, because they trap lint and can burn. The Consumer Product Safety Commission shares appliance safety advice.
This job pairs well with cleaning your washing machine. Add both to your home maintenance checklist.
Now you know how to clean a dryer vent safely. Do it yearly, watch for warning signs and use proper metal ducts. A clean vent lowers your fire risk, dries clothes faster and trims your energy bill.
