How to Flush a Water Heater to Extend Its Life
Learn how to flush a water heater in simple steps to remove sediment, improve efficiency and add years to its lifespan.
Knowing how to install a ceiling fan lets you improve comfort and cut cooling costs. A fan moves air so rooms feel several degrees cooler. In winter, it can push warm air back down. With basic electrical skills and the right tools, you can finish the job in two to three hours.
If you are not comfortable working with electrical wiring, hire a licensed electrician. Safety always comes first.
A ceiling fan moves and vibrates. Therefore, the box must be rated for fans. Look for a label that says “suitable for fan support.” A standard light fixture box is not strong enough. If needed, install a fan-rated box or brace.
Match fan size to the room.
| Room Size | Fan Diameter |
|---|---|
| Up to 75 sq ft | 29 to 36 inches |
| 76 to 144 sq ft | 36 to 42 inches |
| 145 to 225 sq ft | 44 to 50 inches |
| 226 to 400 sq ft | 50 to 54 inches |
Hang the blades at least seven feet above the floor and 18 inches from walls.
Switch off the breaker that feeds the room. Then use a voltage tester at the wires to confirm no current. Do not rely on the wall switch alone.
Unscrew the old light fixture and disconnect the wires. Remove the old mounting bracket.
Fasten the new bracket to the fan-rated box using the screws provided. Make sure it sits firmly with no wobble.
On the floor, assemble the motor housing, downrod and canopy following the manual. Thread the wires through the downrod. Tighten the set screws securely.
Lift the fan assembly and hook it onto the bracket. Many brackets have a ball-and-hook design that holds the fan while you wire it.
Match wire colors.
Twist on wire nuts firmly and tuck the wires into the box.
Fasten the blades to the blade arms first, then to the motor. Install the light kit and bulbs. Secure the canopy against the ceiling.
Turn the breaker back on. Test every speed and the reverse switch. If the fan wobbles, tighten screws and use the balancing kit included.
Run the fan counterclockwise in summer for a cooling breeze. Switch to clockwise at low speed in winter. This habit helps you lower your electric bill.
